What exactly is Tigernut milk?

Tigernut milk is not as widely acknowledged as certain other diary-free milk options in some countries, like the U.K, etc. however it is a cherished drink in Spain.

This special drink is called HORCHATA DE CHUFA and is served ice-cold in hot summer. It is also consumed in Mexico with cinnamon and vanilla.

Tigernuts aren’t nuts, nor do they have anything to do with a tiger. Tigernut is a fantastic food for a majority of diet choices: paleo, gluten-free, vegan, whole food, etc.

They have a few names including tigernut, chufa, yellow nutsedge, etc. and were originally cultivated in Egypt as far back as 4000bc, in phrases of taste, it can be a bit hard to describe. Some days they are similar to almonds with a rich, nutty flavor.

Tigernut milk is a special drink very popular n Nigeria t is also known as KUNNU AYA. It is made with Tigernut as its main ingredient, water, some recipes call for dates, ginger, and some other sweeteners like honey, etc.

Making tigernut milk is very easy and stress-free, it requires just a few ingredients to pull together. Below is a special recipe on how to make tigernut milk

Tigernut is said to be a species of plant in the sedge family popular across the world. It is found in most of the Eastern Hemisphere, including Southern Europe, Africa, and Madagascar, it is also known in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

Tigernut is cultivated as an edible tuber, called earth almonds or Cyperus esculentus (due to the stripes on their tubers and their hard shell), it can also be as a snack food and for the preparation of horchata de chufa or KUNNU AYA a sweet, milk-like delicious and healthy beverage.

Coconut

Coconut

A coconut is referred to as the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which is a drupe botanically and not a nut. Coconut is also an ingredient in making Tigernut milk.

It has its botanically name as “Cocos nucifera” Coconuts differ from other fruits because their endosperm contains a large quantity of clear liquid, called coconut water or coconut juice.

A mature, ripe coconut can be used as edible seeds. It plays a vital role in making Tigernut milk as its milky and creamy flavor when the blender adds a unique quality to the Tigernut milk drink.

Dates, on the other hand, is a healthy sweet fruit that is high in natural sugar, most people think they may not be suitable for them but trust me they are amazing.

These sweet fruits “DATES” are packed with plenty of nutrients, making them an amazing snack sparsely.

Ginger

Ginger

Ginger here is to spice the drink a little, a little is to be added as most people don’t like ginger. Note: it is not compulsory, you can choose to make it based on your preference. But ginger is very medicinal, so choose wisely.

STEPS TO OBSERVE BEFORE MAKING TIGERNUT MILK

1. In a bowl measure three cups of tigernut, add water above it and soak overnight or for 24 hours. 

Note: (don’t soak if you are working with a fresh tigernut).

2. slice your coconut into bits and set it aside.

3. Also cut your ginger 

4. And then for your Dates remove the seed in it by cutting it into two. And also soak overnight, to soften it.

Having done these steps. We’ll move to the procedures on how to make tigernut milk.

PROCEDURES IN MAKING TIGERNUT MILK

  1. Transfer your tigernut, coconut, and little ginger to your blender, add 2 ½ cups of water and blend till it is smooth. Then transfer in a bowl 
  2. Place your dates in the blender and blend till it’s smooth. And then pour into the same bowl with the blended tigernut mixture.
  3. Mix and sieve with a sieving cloth or any sieve you have with thin holes to avoid letting the chaff go into the milk.
  4. Afterward, transfer in bottles and refrigerate. And you are done………

Best served chilled!!!
